![]() However, by the late 1980s, iris photometers were superseded by scanning machines which digitized the images and used image processing software to make more precise measurements of stars in crowded fields. The eyepiece was still advantageous in situations like this.” And so good old Helen and her eye and brain were smarter than that machine. The astrophotometer is at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, accession number 2008.0184.001.Ĭlement remembers the light table sometimes having an advantage over more complex technologies, such as an iris photometer in that it enabled the examination of individual stars on ‘messy’ plates stars were close together, as in a globular cluster, shown in the accompanying plate: “…because if the field is too crowded the iris diaphragm picks up other stars in the vicinity and makes a crowded star appear brighter than it really is. Having a negative print is convenient because you can write on it and label the positions of the stars of interest, both the standards and the variables.”Īlso in 1963, Hogg acquired a Cuffey iris astrophotometer, for the measurement and analysis of variable stars, which Clement also used. The chart is a print that looks exactly like the plate, i.e. So someone had already set up a sequence of standards: stars A, B, C, D, E, F, G, which were labelled on an ID chart. The object was to estimate the brightness of the variable stars, but to do that, you have to have standards to compare them with. “I was given a little eye piece, and I had to put it down on the plate and examine the images. ![]() ![]() Professor of Astronomy Christine Clement remembers being trained to use this table by Hogg as part of research conducted for Hogg in the summer of 1963, just prior to her Master’s degree. She took on teaching duties at the university during WWII and later advanced to full professor in astronomy at the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto. She continued her work, including taking the included 1939 plate of the globular cluster M13, while also traveling for her research. Hogg moved to the David Dunlap Observatory in Richmond Hill when her husband received a job there in 1935. This table was used by University of Toronto astronomy professor Helen Sawyer Hogg for the identification and measurement of variable stars.

![]() In a world where you need to learn to choose your words wisely, it will be prudent to polish your vocabulary. Thank you for the review! We work hard to meet expectations like yours, and we’re happy to hear we hit the mark for you. I love learning words and this app has made me completely happy. Anyway, I can go on and on about all I love about this app. The display is nice and clean - no clutter - so you can focus on the word. You can mark words as favorite so you can go over them again and again as a way to learn. You can choose level of difficulty, which is perfect for me because I wanted advanced and other apps don’t have advanced. This is really important for me because I easily learn words if I know their origins. It has all sorts of additional helpful tools to do that, like a direct link to Google (though I do wish it was connected to Miriam-Webster because that dictionary offers comprehensive definition of the word, including its origins), so you can get a bigger definition. This app makes it easy to learn new words. I’m living under a bridge mindlessly scrolling until I pass out and I can’t take it anymore. If I am being honest I haven’t been sleeping at all because the adrenaline rush of an anticipated word shoots throughout my body HAHAHAHAHAHAH□ thousands of hours of my life wasted on this app. I’ve lost so many friends and family on this fierce journey but it’s all worth it once I get that notification of a new word bright and early at 3:00 am. I’ve sent hundreds of messages to all of my friends telling them to get the vocabulary app…I got blocked. I genuinely think I’d end it all if I didn’t get the chance to use this app again. MY LOVE FOR THESE WORDS IS INDESCRIBABLY POWERFUL. I CANT STOP SCROLLING!! I can’t describe my agonizing addiction to this app in words, only sounds in which my family is beginning to get concerned for my mental health. Luckily for most of us, Martin released a more affordable version of the Guitar in Black: the Martin DX Johnny Cash! This now historic model is currently on display at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Cash constantly played his Martin D-35: in the studio (over twenty albums, including the legendary 1969 'Live at San Quentin') and on the road (nearly exclusive use of Martin on his “The Johnny Cash Show”). When you hear this coming from one of the best selling artists, you don’t have a pinch of doubt as to the product Martin delivers. What Cash loved the most about Martin guitars was the robust sound that matched his deep vocals as well as the quality which stood the test of time. “The Man in Black” rocking out his all-black D-35 Custom paints the perfect outlaw picture and will forever be associated with popular country music.
